Dual Degrees
Dual degrees are degree courses combining two areas of study. In some cases this may result in being awarded two separate degrees, while in other cases it may result in only one award (encompassing the two areas of study) being granted.
The structure of a dual degree can vary from institution to institution. However, in most cases dual degrees can be completed in less time than completing the two degrees separately.
How do I apply for a dual degree?
Applying for a dual degree can vary between institutions.
For most institutions, a dual degree has a separate QTAC code, distinct to the QTAC codes allocated to the single degrees. It is this specific QTAC code that must be entered as a preference in order to apply for the dual degree.
Example: Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Information Technology (QTAC code 419202) at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). The QTAC code is different to the single Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Information Technology codes.
For other institutions, a dual degree will not have a distinct QTAC code, so applicants must apply for entry into one of the single degrees. If accepted into the single degree, applicants will be sent an enrolment package from the institution outlining the dual degree options available with that course. The applicant then enrols into the preferred dual degree directly with the institution. Please note, the minimum entry requirements for both degrees (eg prerequisites and rank cut-offs) must be satisfied in order to gain entry into the dual degree upon enrolment.
Information on how to apply for a dual degree can be found in the course entry information when you Search for Courses. If the dual degree is not listed separately, check the course entry for both single degrees for information on which QTAC code to list on your application.
Will I have two degrees at the end of my study?
It depends on the specific course and institution as to the award received at the end of the study. As previously mentioned, you may receive the one award encompassing the two areas of study, or you may receive two separate awards. Please consult the institution you are applying to for clarification.
Terminology
Different institutions may have different titles and categories for their dual degrees. It may be referred to as:
- Dual
- Double
- Combined
This list is not exhaustive, and you should speak to the institution for clarification on individual course terminology.
TAFE Diploma/Degree courses
An increasing number of Diploma/Degree courses have become available between TAFE Qld and universities. The structure of these courses can vary across institutions. Some courses may involve completing the Diploma through TAFE and then continuing straight to the university course, or there may be overlapping TAFE and university study throughout the course. Contact the individual institutes for further information.
