Who is eligible?

Eligibility requirements for Commonwealth Scholarships and Institution Equity Scholarships can differ.

Applicants should note that being eligible does not guarantee that you will receive a scholarship.

To lodge your application for an equity scholarship, please see How to Apply.

Commonwealth Scholarships Program (CS)

To be eligible for Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships, Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships and Indigenous Access Scholarships you must meet the following requirements:

Citizenship and Residency

You must be an Australian citizen or the holder or a permanent humanitarian visa. (Indigenous scholarships only open to Australian citizens)

Low socio-economic status

You must demonstrate financial disadvantage either:

Study Load

You must be enrolled or about to commence study as a full-time student in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP).  Your institution may accept exceptional circumstances that prevent you from studying full-time, such as a disability or significant carer responsibilities.  Using the information you provide in your scholarship application, institutions will apply their own policies to assess your eligibility if you are studying part-time.

Prior Study

You must not have completed the requirements of a course of study equivalent to or higher than an Australian Bachelor's award unless

  • the award is a prerequisite to your current undergraduate course of study
  • graduate diploma (or equivalent postgraduate course of study) in an area of National Priority required for initial registration
  • and there is no alternative pathway into that course of study at your institution
  • some institutions also require that existing tertiary students have a passing grade point average

Additional eligibility requirements for Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS)

Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) are open to commencing and continuing students from regional and remote areas of Australia who have demonstrated current financial hardship and who had (or will have to) relocate to undertake their current (or planned) higher education course of study (including students within another program or at another provider, where the student has transferred).

  • you have or will incur additional accommodation costs as a result of having to relocate
  • you will be enrolled in 2009 as an internal student
  • within the four years immediately preceding the commencement of your current higher education study you must have satisfied one of the four requirements
    • lived in a regional or remote area for at least 3 years
    • completed your final two years of schooling in a high school/college in a regional or remote area
